Fun Ways To Use Snow This Winter

1. Paint on Snow

Practice making letters, numbers and shapes with paint in the snow using a spray bottle.

This activity works on:

  • Letter, number, and shape recognition

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Hand strength

  • Visual perceptual skills

  • Aim and accuracy

  • Prewriting/ handwriting development


2. Snow cookies

Make various shapes and figures using cookie cutters in the snow.

This activity works on:

  • Hand strength

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Shape recognition


3. Tic Tac Toe in the Snow

Practice making pre-writing lines within the snow in the classic game of "Tic Tac Toe".

This activity works on:

  • Visual Tracking

  • Hand eye coordination

  • Social Skills (following directions, taking turns)

  • Prewriting lines (O, X)

  • Problem solving


4. Mr. Snow Potato Head

Use two hands to make a ball or "potato". Use Mr. Potato Head items (arms, legs, mouth etc) and place them in your snowball or be creative and find items to make your own body parts.

This activity works on:

  • Body awareness

  • Hand eye coordination

  • Hand strength

  • Fine motor skill development

  • Motor planning












5. Snowball letters

Stick, pin or write multiple letters/numbers/shapes on a solid surface (wall, tree, fence etc). Make snowballs and have the child throw snowballs to identify letters, numbers and/or shapes.

This activity works on:

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Letter, number, and shape recognition

  • Visual perceptual skills

  • Aim and accuracy

6. Scavenger hunt

Make a checklist with various items. Hide these different items within the snow and have the child find them.

  • Visual scanning

  • Coordination

  • Following directions


7. Make snowmen

This activity works on:

  • Heavy work/ Proprioceptive input

  • Motor planning

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Balance














8. Animal walks in the Snow

Have the child complete different animal walks (i.e. crab, bear, bunny, frog, horse, snake, etc) across the snow. Make it a race for friendly competition!

This activity works on:

  • Balance

  • Core Strength

  • Coordination

  • Proprioceptive input

  • Vestibular input

  • Jumping/Hopping
















9. Snow maze

Make a snow maze in the snow. Have the child problem solve how to get from the starting point to the ending point. Mark the maze using snow paint to help the child stay on the path.

This activity works on:

  • Visual perceptual

  • Visual scanning

  • Hand eye coordination

  • Motor planning

  • Problem solving

  • Balance


10. Colored snowball toss

Use different colored buckets or mark an area a specific color. Make different colored snow balls, then have the child throw the snowballs into the matching colored bucket or marked area.

This activity works on:

  • Color recognition

  • Hand eye coordination

  • Visual scanning

  • Matching colors

  • Balance




*HOW TO MAKE SNOW PAINT*

Place water into a spray bottle. Place 4-5 drops of food coloring inside the bottle of water. Close the bottle then shake it well. If the color is lighter or dull, add another drop of food coloring.
