Sensory and Motor Skill Development With Bubbles!

Give these bubble activities a try to help develop various areas of development for your child.


1. Fine Motor Skills

  • Pop bubbles using the index finger to work on finger isolation

  • Practice "clapping" to pop the bubbles between hands

  • Bilateral coordination via one hand to blow bubbles with wand and other hand holding bubble container

  • Pincer grasp development when holding the wand

  • Crossing midline to pop bubbles by reaching across the body




2. Gross Motor Skills

  • Single stance balance and foot-eye coordination skills by stomping on and kicking the bubbles

  • Jumping over the bubbles

  • Squat down to pop bubbles

  • Dynamic sitting and standing balance via reaching for bubbles in various directions

  • Blow bubbles to divert attention from tummy time and to promote gross motor milestones such as rolling, crawling, sitting, independent standing etc.

  • Helps encourage running skills by running towards the bubbles to pop them


3. Visual Motor Skills

  • Visual tracking skills worked on by following the bubbles with their eyes

  • Hand-eye coordination skills via using eyes and hands together for accuracy when catching and popping the bubbles



4. Oral Motor

  • Blowing bubbles helps to develop lip rounding by strengthening small muscles around the mouth



4. Sensory:

  • Tactile input provided by feeling the bubbles pop on their hands

  • Proprioceptive input through using oral muscles to blow the bubbles

  • Visual stimulation via watching the bubbles pop/move around the room

  • Auditory input through listening when the bubbles are clapped and stomped on

  • Vestibular input is worked when moving the body in various motions and directions to catch the bubbles
